چکیده

Numerical difficulties are present in the particle finite element method even though it has been shown to be a powerful and effective approach to simulating fluid-structure interaction. To overcome problems of mass loss on the free surface and the added-mass effect, an improved fractional step method (FSM) that handles addedmass terms in a mathematically exact way is developed. A further benefit is that no assumptions regarding the structural response are made in handling added-mass terms, thus it is straightforward to incorporate material nonlinearity in fluid-structure interaction (FSI) under this approach. Patch tests and comparisons with experimental data are presented in order to verify and validate the improved FSM for FSI applications. The computational cost of this approach is shown to be negligible compared with the other aspects of the FSM, particularly when the size of the structure and the fluid-structure interface is small relative to the volume of fluid. The Particle Finite Element Method. an Overview

We present a general formulation for analysis of fluid-structure interaction problems using the particle finite element method (PFEM). The key feature of the PFEM is the use of a Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in both the fluid and the structure domains. Nodes are thus viewed as particles which can freely move and even separate from the main analysis domain repr...

Modeling fluid–structure interaction by the particle finite element method in OpenSees

The OpenSees finite element software framework is extended for simulating fluid–structure interaction (FSI) by the particle finite element method (PFEM). At high levels of the framework, new classes handle meshing and interface detection of the fluid and structure domains and implement the fractional step method in order to solve the governing equations of linear momentum and mass conservation....

Direct Differentiation of the Particle Finite-Element Method for Fluid–Structure Interaction

Sensitivity analysis of fluid–structure interaction (FSI) provides an important tool for assessing the reliability and performance of coastal infrastructure subjected to storm and tsunami hazards. As a preliminary step for gradient-based applications in reliability, optimization, system identification, and performance-based engineering of coastal infrastructure, the direct differentiation metho...

Investigation of Fluid-structure Interaction by Explicit Central Finite Difference Methods

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) occurs when the dynamic water hammer forces; cause vibrations in the pipe wall. FSI in pipe systems due to Poisson and junction coupling has been the center of attention in recent years. It causes fluctuations in pressure heads and vibrations in the pipe wall. The governing equations of this phenomenon include a system of first order hyperbolic partial differen...

Simulation of fluid−flexible structure interaction

Systems involving flexible bodies interacting with surrounding fluid flow are commonplace, but are challenging to model numerically on account of their complex geometries and freely moving boundaries. In the present study, we developed an immersed boundary method (IB) for simulating fluid−flexible structure interactions. Our method is based on an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the frac...
